Former Bears Defenceman To Play In World Junior A Challenge

Less than two years since starring with the Innovex Estevan Bears, standout defenceman Thomas Ries will wear the Maple Leaf at the World Junior A Challenge this December.

Ries, who is currently a top defenceman in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) with the Yorkton Terriers, was one of six SJHL players named to Team Canada West ahead of the prestigious tournament being held in Trois-Rivières, Quebec from December 7th – 13th.

Ries played two seasons (2022-24) with the Bears, tallying 47 points (15G, 32A) in 77 regular season games and also scored the overtime winner in the Bears’ first ever playoff victory in Game 3 of the 2024 SMAAAHL quarterfinals. Ries was also named to the SMAAAHL First All-Star Team for his play during the 23/24 season. In his first season with Yorkton, Ries racked up 33 points (11G, 22A) in 56 regular season games and was named a finalist for the SJHL Rookie-of-the-Year award. This year, Ries already has 21 points (6G, 15A) in 21 games.

Congratulations to Thomas on this achievement, and good luck in the World Junior A Challenge!
